Pure Glycerin

200 ml Audran Pure Glycerin

Usual uses for glycerin

Glycerin is used in many industries, including skin care, hair care and oral hygiene .. in fact, glycerin is the third most-used ingredient in the cosmetic industry after water and fragrance!

Why?

Glycerin is widely regarded as the most effective humectant. Humectants are water-absorbing substances that help keep things moist. This property of glycerine helps retain moisture in the skin and ……. slows down the process of water evaporation in bubbles!

Soap bubbles are marvellous because there is so much to be learned from them.

People of all ages are fascinated with them. Although bubbles have been a favourite among children for hundreds of years, it was not until the early 1900’s that bubble solution was actually sold as a toy for children. Before that, it was just soapy dishwater.

It’s not possible to blow bubbles with plain water because of water’s surface tension. The water molecules stick together and you cannot form a big air space in the middle. The liquid soap does not let the water stick together just as well, so it is possible to form a bubble.

Glycerin is a thick liquid which attracts moisture – adding glycerin to the soap and water mixture helps make the bubbles last longer by slowing down how quickly the bubbles dry out.

What Is Pure Glycerin?

Glycerin is a type of carbohydrate known as a sugar alcohol or a polyol. This odorless liquid has a sweet taste and a syrupy consistency. While glycerin occurs naturally in plants through the fermentation of sugars, most of the glycerin nowadays is produced from the hydrolysis of fats and oils.

The first man-made attempt to produce glycerin was in 1779 by K. W. Scheele, a Swedish chemist, when he was boiling a mixture of olive oil and another chemical containing lead.

The thick, transparent liquid Scheele separated from the oily mixture was called glycerol due to its sweet taste (“glykos” in Greek means sweet). Scheele’s method of preparation was used in the first commercial manufacturing of glycerin, which quickly found uses in many fields, including health care, cosmetics, and food.

Today, the glycerin used in commercial products is at least 95% pure. Many commercially manufactured glycerin products contain different amounts of glycerin and other impurities, including salt, water, and other organic compounds.

Mission Briefing

Your bugstronaut is about to embark on a daring space mission — but first, we need to fuel the rocket! Add water and a fizz tablet to your rocket tube, snap the bug-topped lid into place… and wait.

Nothing seems to be happening at first, but inside the sealed tube, something incredible is going on. The tablet is fizzing away, releasing an invisible gas called carbon dioxide. As the gas builds up, the pressure rises higher… and higher… and HIGHER…

Suddenly — POP! WHOOSH! Your bug blasts skyward, ready to return home to its planet! Can you aim carefully enough to land your bug safely in its home planet bucket?

What’s Happening Inside the Tube?

The fizzing tablet contains citric acid and sodium bicarbonate (sodium hydrogen carbonate). When they mix with water, they react to make carbon dioxide gas. The gas has nowhere to escape, so it builds up inside the sealed rocket tube. When the pressure becomes too much, it forces the lid off — and your bugstronaut launches into orbit!

This thrilling moment is a perfect way to explore:

The Devastatingly Dramatic Climate Show: A Virtual Science Experience

Next best thing to a live show!

Enthusiastic, informative and interactive science shows delivered virtually – with pupil interactions built in!

The most exciting part of this Virtual Experience Plus! is the fact that you, the teacher, is now in charge! You can stop the video to check on your children’s understanding, to repeat a section they really enjoyed and to wait for the child/children needed to carry out one of the 7 experiments this interactive session requires volunteers for!

You may also have some favourite demonstrations you would want to perform between sketches!

There is no set timetable to adhere to.

You may choose to split the viewing of the show over several days and you may also want to choose more volunteers than I ask for. You may also decide to organise the session so that the whole class carries out one or more the experiments!

If your timetable permits you could spend a whole morning or afternoon celebrating science!

The show video can be up-loaded on to your school’s preferred learning platform. It can be shown to individual classes or to larger groups in the school hall and can even be shared with parents!

The show is supported with teaching notes and a guidance video which runs through the equipment required and the ‘how to do’ sections of the experiments which use volunteers.

Many of the items above are available in our online store!

When you book your Virtual Science Experience you will be:

sent the show video (which has an introduction section tailored to your event). This can then be up-loaded onto your schools’ platform.

sent a second video and pdf document at the same time – they give guidance on the interactive sections of the show (the parts Scientific Sue needs volunteers for) and on the hands-on workshop.

posted the Experience Activity Box. This box contains the items and chemicals required for the interactive sections of the show and the subsequent hands-on workshop (for 30 children – want extra kits? Contact us before booking)

Scientific Sue would normally choose just one or two volunteers per sketch to help her out on stage during her live shows; this show is virtual you, so you the teacher (facilitator), is now in charge of these sections of the activity. You will be guided to stop the video at certain points throughout the show. At these times:

You may stick to the programme and choose the number of volunteers Sue requests or

You can pause the video for longer and have extra helpers or

let ALL of your pupils do the experiment!

We love option 3! It is perfect for the classroom plus festivals, birthday parties and fun corporate events – This is the joy of not being constrained by a timetable built around an outreach programme which is not virtual.

We add the personal touch to your show video of choice!

Let us know about your event and the key messages you want your audience to be aware of. Scientific Sue will produce a short introduction video for you which will then be spliced into the video/s or your choice. Want your own introduction added? Just send us the clip via WeTransfer.

Your logo (plus other logos if the event is sponsored) will also be included.

Each ‘Virtual Experience Plus!’ activity comes with its own set of teaching notes and a short explanatory video for you the teacher (facilitator) on examples of how you can run the sessions as well as the virtual show video and accompanying interactivity box.

All of Science2Life’s STEAM ACADEMY workshops are designedto not only motivate and fire the spirit of discovery within children but also ignite curiosity in their minds.

Age Suitability: 6-13

Weather can be extreme, scary and devasting and the effects ofclimate change is just going make weather even scarier. No better topic for Scientific Sue to use her drama skills to entertain you!!

We all know about tornados but did you know fires can also spin! Join us to find out how fire tornados can be formed and why the Australian fire brigade call the eucalyptus tree ‘the gasoline tree’.

This show has given Scientific Sue a few engineering challenges too. Find out how a super flooding system, not fedby rain water but by Mentos (!) can be built. High winds and flooding can knock down bridges – sometimes these bridges are the life line for remote villages – volunteers will be needed to help build a pulley system out of balloons to help save the stranded villagers!

Something must be melting to cause the Earth’s water levels to rise. What is it? Thinking icebergs? Wrong!!

The consequences of any changes to our climate could lead tointense droughts, storms, heat waves and rising sea levels

– we don’t want to alarm you we want to scare you!

Scare you with crazy, innovative science demonstrations which will answer many questions about climate change but may also put your volunteer’s very existence in danger!

Warning: this show is at times educational however; it might occasionally be highly fictional. You should only partake if you want to enjoya creatively shocking but fun-filled experience!

Using pulley systems to save lives

How do different liquids flow?

How do different chemicals react together?

Which chemicals when mixed give you a fizz? Answer: Any acid (vinegar, fruit juice, citric acid) with baking soda.

What do we need our children need to learn?

the language used around measurements such as weight, capacity, volume and time

they need to know about units used in the past, Imperial Units (ounces, pounds, yards, hectares, pints, etc) and the System International used today (see below)

they need to know how to convert kilograms to pound, or litres to pints etc, as well as scaling up or down – a skill used by builders on a daily basis.

Teaching Volume and Capacity

The language around volume and capacity can be tricky because these words are not often used in daily conversation, and therefore can be confusing for our young ones.

A litre bottle has a capacity of 1 litre whether it is empty or full; however

Small Funnel

if the water bottle is full, the volume of water is 1 litre if the bottle is empty the volume is zero.

Grab some containers of different sizes (egg cups, beakers, plastic storage boxes, pots and pans), provide some water (in the sink, the bath, or a bucket outside), and let children compare capacities by filling and pouring from one to another. Encourage them to use language such as full, empty, contains more/less than. Can your child compare the containers and see which ones have less and which ones have more?

Make sure they check the capacities by pouring – we don’t want them to think that taller, thinner containers always hold more that shorter, wider ones!

All children love playing with water. To fill our syringe you have to pull the plunger our slowly; what happens if you pull the plunger too fast. Developing motor skills doesn’t always mean we have to be fast!

Encourage your children to talk about what they are doing. If you have more than one child – buying just one kit will develop their ‘work as a team’ skills.. (oops should I be saying that!)

The aim of any activity is for your child/children to see themselves as scientists and engineers – I will let you do the research on the job opportunities open to them and the potential salaries they could earn.

Thinking like a scientist is a skill set which has allowed many individuals and companies meet the COVID problems. Some have survived, many are flourishing!

Activities to try at home

Here are some ideas for fun, practical activities to harness your child’s natural love of playing with water while building their confidence with volume and capacity.

1. Water, water everywhere

Ensure they check the capacities by pouring and don’t think that taller, thinner containers always hold more than shorter, wider ones. Older children can start to compare more accurately by using measuring jugs, and by drawing their own scales on empty plastic bottles in non-standard units (e.g. egg cups) or standard units (e.g. 100 ml).

In this video Scientific Sue will show you how you can use the red cabbage powder in a very magical spell.

From the Latin amor (love) tentamen (attempt or effort), Amortentia is a powerful love enchantment. The spell doesn’t actually create love, but causes the target to be strongly attracted to a particular witch or wizard. Both muggles and wizards can fall under the spell of AMORTENTIA!

This video will take you through the steps you need to take to wow your audience – Science Magic – Fun Guaranteed!

Secrets for Success:

Potions and Explosions Spell Book Click on this link for the full version of this and other spells!

Add a spoonful of the dried cabbage powder into the 60 ml cup. Top up with 40 ml warm water. Leave for 10 minutes. Use a sieve to remove the rehydrated cabbage leaves. You now have some “Dragon’s Drool’ to use in your AMORTENTIA Spell!

Prepare the cups before your audience arrives: place a spoonful of Dried Skin of Basilisk (Citric Acid) into one clear cup and Horn of Bicorn (Baking Soda) in to another.

Watch the video to give you an idea of a possible story line. Don’t forget this is your spell so you can make up any story to go with the colour changes.

Test other powders and liquid in the kitchen and bathroom, with adult supervision. Can you get any other colours? Use the Red cabbage card to give you some ideas.

Science2Life’s Science iT! activities and programmes

Children love to be engaged in learning, especially through interactive projects that they can really get involved and be hands on with.

Science2Life’s Science iT! activities and programmes are part of our STEAM Academy. The activities use everyday life objects, toys and knick-knacks and turns them into fun, innovative, hands-on experiences designed to encourage children to:

discover the amazing world of science and engineering

to perform engaging activities that show how science and engineering is at work in their everyday lives

to foster a lifelong love of science and engineering

to give a basic grounding in scientific concepts and scientific thinking

to increase children’s motivation to learn and

enhance their perception, creativity and logic.

Hands-on learning is learning by doing.

Children involved in our ‘Science iT!’ activities and programmes are introduced to various STEAM learning methods and activities. Our creative programmes involve learning activities that require active thinking and experimenting to find out how things work. We all know how curious children are about the world around them and how they love using the word ‘why?’

The aim of our activities is to provide optimal learning opportunities that strategically help children grasp mathematics, engineering and science concepts.

With the inclusion of the arts component into STEM it makes it more fun to learn, and more approachable to children.

Art education allows children to learn things in a more open-ended way and make them applicable to real life.

Links to the curriculum

All of Science2Life activities can be used to entertain children – however they have been created with the curriculum in mind, so are perfect activities to generate mesmerizing examples of the topics they can be used to explore.

Plus our Science iT! activities can up scaled-up to be used in workshops within the classroom, for festival and birthday celebrations, which provide opportunities for children to collaborate on initiatives, explorations and creations.

The idea behind our Science iT! activities is to ignite children’s natural innate curiosity about the world around them (and the items in it) and to channel their enthusiasm for scientific discovery as early as possible.

A snippet from our teaching notes

Bromocresol green is a dye used as a pH indicator for many biological experiments.

Bromocresol green colour chart

A pH indicator is a chemical compound added in small amounts to a solution so that the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of the solution can be seen. The pH indicator is a chemical detector for hydronium ions (H3O+) or hydrogen ions (H+). The indicators change the colour of the solution depending on the pH. Some indicators only have 2 colour changes; Litmus (a solution of different dyes made from lichen) is red in acid or blue in alkaline solutions.

Typical indicators are phenolphthalein, methyl orange, methyl red, bromothymol blue, and thymol blue. They each change colour at different points on the pH scale, and can be used together as a universal indicator.

Bromocresol green is yellow in solutions with pH values less than 3.8; green for pH values between 3.8 and 5.4 and blue for solutions with a pH value above 5.4.

Why does the bath water always turn the bubble bath blue?

The pH of pure water is 7, any solution with a pH less than 7 is considered to be acidic, and with a pH above 7 considered alkaline. However, tap water can have a pH value between 6.5 and 8.5. For all liquids which have a pH value greater that 5.4 the bromocresol green indicator in the soap will always turn a blue colour.
