What pupils do during the experience
Using this Extra Classroom Kit alongside your existing Science of Dragons classroom video, pupils take part in a sequence of six guided investigations inspired by the dragons of Berk.
Each section is introduced by Scientific Sue on screen and supported by simple activities arranged on trays before the event.
Part 1 – Toothless Flies Again

Meet your balloon dragon! In this STEAM activity, pupils use a hairdryer to spin and fly their balloon creature.
Pupils explore forces and movement as a balloon dragon takes flight using a hairdryer.
They investigate how pushes and air movement can make objects travel through the air — before the dragon is safely “captured” for training!
Part 2 – Stormfly’s Spectrum
Using red cabbage indicator, pupils discover how some substances change colour depending on acidity and alkalinity.
This leads to a discussion about how animals such as chameleons can appear to change colour.
Part 3 – Science Showdown
Two colourful “dragon solutions” are mixed to investigate neutralisation reactions.
Pupils observe dramatic colour change and gas production as acidic and alkaline solutions combine.
Part 4 – Unmask the Gas
Pupils investigate the properties of carbon dioxide, discovering how this invisible gas behaves differently from air and how scientists can identify it.
Part 5 – Blast Off! 5–4–3–2–1
Carbon dioxide is safely trapped inside a tube to demonstrate how gases can build pressure and create movement.
This investigation links to how Gronckle dragons might spit their famous exploding rocks such long distances!
Part 6 – Train Your Own Balancing Dragon
In the final whole-class activity, every pupil colours, builds and trains their own balancing dragon model, exploring centre of mass and stability through hands-on engineering.
Each child creates a dragon that really balances on its nose — a memorable finale to the experience.
