1. The Bubble Sandwich!

Every bubble is a stretchy sandwich made of soap–water–soap. This delicate film traps air inside, thanks to something called surface tension. Soap weakens the water’s grip just

enough to let it stretch and flex into a bubble without bursting straight away.

To make these bubbles super strong, we add clever ingredients like xanthan gum (included in your kit!). This special powder slows down how quickly the water evaporates and makes the bubble film much more elastic — perfect for creating bubbles you can catch and bounce!

2. Keeping Bubbles Alive for Longer

Bubbles usually pop because their water disappears into the air (especially on warm or windy days). That’s why we include a pH adjuster (baking powder) and bubble-strengthening agents in our kit — they work together to slow evaporation and give you more time to play.

In this video Scientific Sue will show you how you can use Ooze Baff crystals in a very magical spell. A similar spell used by the Death Eaters in the Mr Potters Magical World. The Science

Ooze baff crystals are an example of  water absorbing polymers.

A polymer is a molecule, made from joining together many small molecules called monomers. The word “polymer” can be broken down into “poly” (meaning “many” in Greek) and “mer” (meaning “unit”).

Sodium polyacrylate are the water absorbing polymers found in babies nappies – the crystals Scientific Sue uses in her first EVANESCO Spell in the video below.

Water absorbing polymers soak up water through a process called osmosis and they swell up. Some, like Ooze Baff, just absorb a small amount of water. Others, like the crystals in nappies absorb huge amounts of water.

The polymer chains have an elastic quality. The amount they stretch depends on the polymer. Ooze Baff makes a wonderful slime like substance, whilst the nappy powder makes a substance like slushy snow.

Most common synthetic polymers are said to be hydrophobic (water-fearing), which means that they do not absorb water. Examples of these polymers might include products such as plastic cups, bags, and plastic toys. There are also hydrophilic, or water-loving polymers. Many natural polymers such as cotton fibres are hydrophilic.

Amaze your children or pupils with this magical colour changing bracelet kit and glow in the dark energy beads!

Kit contents

• 100 UV mixed colour changing / glow in the dark pony beads 8 mm x 6 mm
• 3 Scroubidou Strings (100 cm)
• 1 piece of soft cord (100 cm)
• 1 UV light pen
• Small tub

Indoors they are coloured dull white but will change into coloured beads (green, yellow, pink, blue or purple) once you expose them to sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) light. 

Make them into bracelets or necklaces or use them on hair braids.

The beads can be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of UV protection in sunglasses, during sun cream experiments or in Science2Life’s Mysterious Microbes Workshop.

• Change colour when exposed to sun or UV light

Research companies use these beads for testing the effects of sun cream and whether it’s able to protect skin from the UV rays. You can use them for research too!

They will change colour backwards and forwards many times. Test the ability of your sunglasses to block out ultraviolet light by covering a few beads with the lens of your sunglasses, if the beads do not change colour, your sunglasses block out harmful ultraviolet light from your eyes. If the beads change colour change your sun glasses!!

Test a variety of glass and plastic materials to determine which materials block out UV light.

This activity is a fun way to make sure your children are protected from the UV rays during the summer sun.

Continuous exposure to UV rays’ overtime will compromise the colour changing properties. The contact of sunscreen products on the beads can also impact on the colour changing pigments of the beads.

Warning: Keep away from small children and pets – choking hazard.

• Magic Snow is very slippery when wet, so make sure any spillages are cleaned up immediately to prevent slipping accidents.

HOW DOES MAGIC SNOW WORK?

1. Add a small amount of Magic Snow on to the palm of your hand. Using the pipette squirt water onto the powder. Watch it magically grow in your hand!
2. Add 1 teaspoon (about 3 g) of Magic Snow powder into an empty clear beaker. Measure 30 ml of room temperature water into a second beaker. Quickly pour all of the water into the cup with the Magic Snow and watch the powder erupt into white fluffy snow!

Want coloured snow? Just add a few drops of food colouring to the water before pouring in onto the Magic Snow granules.

Want to build a snowman? Form the snow into snow balls or use the plastic ‘snowman shaped’ packaging.

Build a snowman with this amazing water absorbing polymer!

Place in the freezer on a tray for an hour or more. You can now stack your snowballs on top of each other and then decorate them!

Want to make a snow fort? Create enough snow to fill an ice tray. Place in the freezer for an hour and you will have building blocks to make a frozen fort! If the blocks are stuck in the tray just run some warm water on the back of the tray to loosen them.

Science in a Nutshell

Magic Snow is an erupting polymer! Magic Snow is actually derived from the superabsorbent polymer, sodium polyacrylate, found in baby nappies. The only difference (and it’s a big one) is that the Magic Snow polymer not only absorbs water but the long chains of molecules swell to an enormous size.

The polymer soaks up water using the process of osmosis (water molecules pass through a barrier from one side to the other). When water comes in contact with the polymer, it moves from outside the polymer to the inside and causes it to swell. The polymer chains have an elastic quality however, they can only stretch only so far and hold just so much water.

The Magic Snow reaction is a great example of a physical reaction – a reaction where the substance itself does not change. When an ice cube melts, a physical reaction takes place where the solid ice turns into a liquid, but the substance (water) never changes – it’s still water! However, in a chemical reaction, a new substance is formed and energy is either given off or absorbed.

If you think of the Magic Snow powder as millions of tiny sponges, it’s easy to see that neither the Magic Snow powder or the water was changed. If you allow the water to evaporate, the Magic Snow powder dries out and returns to its previous state, ready to be used again.

Also, because of water’s unique shape, it is capable of associating with two polymer chains. For this reason, two polymer chains surround each layer of water molecules, with each row of water molecules forming a bridge between the two chains. Imagine the polymer–water
complex as something of a molecular sandwich, where the polymer chains are the “bread” and the water molecules are the “jam.” This ability of water to link between chains is called cross-linking, and it is what allows the polymer to absorb so much water.

What happens when you put some table salt on top of the snow?

Salt causes water to leak out of the sodium polyacrylate because it disrupts the attraction between water and the polymer chain. When salt is added, it breaks up into negative and positive ions, which are also attracted to the water molecules. In fact, each ion attracts several water molecules to it. Eventually, when enough salt is added, the water molecules become more attracted to the ions than the polymer chains, and water leaks out of the mixture.
