Science2Life’s Science iT! Activities take everyday life objects, toys and knick-knacks and turns them into fun, innovative science projects.

In this activity Scientific Sue is using the colour changing properties of red cabbage to perform the AMORTENTIA Enchantment.

Red cabbage – which is purple! – is a natural acid/base indicator

Red Cabbage Magic

3 x small clear measuring cups

1 x 60 ml measuring up

2 x 50 ml bottles with flip top cap

2 Pipettes

Tub of Baking Soda – 40 g

Tub of Citric Acid – 40 g

4 x wooden stirring spoons

Liquified Ogre’s Bogeys label

Dragons drool Label

In this video Scientific Sue will show you how you can use the red cabbage powder in a very magical spell.

From the Latin amor (love) tentamen (attempt or effort), Amortentia is a powerful love enchantment. The spell doesn’t actually create love, but causes the target to be strongly attracted to a particular witch or wizard. Both muggles and wizards can fall under the spell of AMORTENTIA!

This video will take you through the steps you need to take to wow your audience – Science Magic – Fun Guaranteed!

Secrets for Success:

Potions and Explosions Spell Book Click on this link for the full version of this and other spells!

Add a spoonful of the dried cabbage powder into the 60 ml cup. Top up with 40 ml warm water. Leave for 10 minutes. Use a sieve to remove the rehydrated cabbage leaves. You now have some “Dragon’s Drool’ to use in your AMORTENTIA Spell!

Prepare the cups before your audience arrives: place a spoonful of Dried Skin of Basilisk (Citric Acid) into one clear cup and Horn of Bicorn (Baking Soda) in to another.

Watch the video to give you an idea of a possible story line. Don’t forget this is your spell so you can make up any story to go with the colour changes.

Test other powders and liquid in the kitchen and bathroom, with adult supervision. Can you get any other colours? Use the Red cabbage card to give you some ideas.

Science2Life’s Science iT! activities and programmes

Children love to be engaged in learning, especially through interactive projects that they can really get involved and be hands on with.

Science2Life’s Science iT! activities and programmes are part of our STEAM Academy. The activities use everyday life objects, toys and knick-knacks and turns them into fun, innovative, hands-on experiences designed to encourage children to:

discover the amazing world of science and engineering

to perform engaging activities that show how science and engineering is at work in their everyday lives

to foster a lifelong love of science and engineering

to give a basic grounding in scientific concepts and scientific thinking

to increase children’s motivation to learn and

enhance their perception, creativity and logic.

Hands-on learning is learning by doing.

Children involved in our ‘Science iT!’ activities and programmes are introduced to various STEAM learning methods and activities. Our creative programmes involve learning activities that require active thinking and experimenting to find out how things work. We all know how curious children are about the world around them and how they love using the word ‘why?’

The aim of our activities is to provide optimal learning opportunities that strategically help children grasp mathematics, engineering and science concepts.

With the inclusion of the arts component into STEM it makes it more fun to learn, and more approachable to children.

Art education allows children to learn things in a more open-ended way and make them applicable to real life.

Links to the curriculum

All of Science2Life activities can be used to entertain children – however they have been created with the curriculum in mind, so are perfect activities to generate mesmerizing examples of the topics they can be used to explore.

Plus our Science iT! activities can up scaled-up to be used in workshops within the classroom, for festival and birthday celebrations, which provide opportunities for children to collaborate on initiatives, explorations and creations.

The idea behind our Science iT! activities is to ignite children’s natural innate curiosity about the world around them (and the items in it) and to channel their enthusiasm for scientific discovery as early as possible.

Currently Science2Life have the following Science iT! activities:

250 ml / 8 oz Plastic Measuring Jug.

This plastic measuring jug is a standard piece of laboratory equipment.

To create the perfect bouncing bubble solution it is really important to measure out the volumes of water, fairy liquid and glycerine accurately. This jug is perfect for measuring volumes of 5 ml increments.

SI Units

Scientists never just grab handfuls of chemicals and toss them together. Accurate, precise measurement is a fundamental component of good science. To standardise measurements across all scientific disciplines scientists developed the International System of Units, known as SI Units. Even with a standardised system, there is room for uncertainty in the laboratory. Minimising this uncertainty ensures proper understanding of a process or experiment.

Scientific measurements use units to quantify and describe the magnitude of something.

There are many different units for the measure of length: inches, feet, centimetres, etc.

Using common units, scientists from different countries and cultures can easily interpret each others’ results.

Use a little bit of science to find out how much the crystals suck up and still stay in a sticky solid format – then use that science in the Evanesco Spell. This video will take you through the steps you need to take to wow and confuse your audience – Science Magic – Fun Guaranteed!

The Science

Ooze baff crystals are an example of water absorbing polymers.

A polymer is a molecule, made from joining together many small molecules called monomers. The word “polymer” can be broken down into “poly” (meaning “many” in Greek) and “mer” (meaning “unit”).

Sodium polyacrylate are the water absorbing polymers found in babies nappies – the crystals Scientific Sue uses in her first EVANESCO Spell in the video below.

Water absorbing polymers soak up water through a process called osmosis and they swell up. Some, like Ooze Baff, just absorb a small amount of water. Others, like the crystals in nappies absorb huge amounts of water.

The polymer chains have an elastic quality. The amount they stretch depends on the polymer. Ooze Baff makes a wonderful slime like substance, whilst the nappy powder makes a substance like slushy snow.

Most common synthetic polymers are said to be hydrophobic (water-fearing), which means that they do not absorb water. Examples of these polymers might include products such as plastic cups, bags, and plastic toys. There are also hydrophilic, or water-loving polymers. Many natural polymers such as cotton fibres are hydrophilic.

10 x 3 ml GRADUATED PIPETTES

Measurements marked up in 0.5 ml increments in these graduated pipettes.

Ideal for measuring small amounts of liquid.

Disposable plastic transfer pipettes, 3 ml graduated

15.5 cm in length

Soft, pliable and easy to use

Using a pipette can help chidden develop fine motor skills.

Scientific Sue cuts the end of the bulb off and then uses the pipettes in her Bouncing Bubble Workshop!

Some uses of pipettes for your young ones:

Dripping coloured water onto absorbent paper

Adding vinegar to baking soda

Transferring coloured liquids from one container to another, say a jar to a paint palette for mixing of colours – this takes lots of concentration!

Adding colours to a bowl of shaving or bath foam.

Watering seeds or plants.

Colour play – start with 2 colours. how many colours can be made? then add a third colour etc.

Plastic transfer pipettes are used to transfer liquids or oils safely into any containers without contact. This makes them ideal for transferring small amounts of liquids such as water and oils for any science or art project. They are also great for decorating cakes!

Oil and Water Experiment

Nuts and Bolts:

Oil (baby oil is good)

Water

Food colouring

Pipettes

Cups/bowls

Clear bowl or dish

Secrets for Success:

3/4 fill you bowl with oil.

decide on the number of colours you are going to use then collect that number of cups – using one for each colour that you want to make.

Using a separate pipette for each colour, squirt the different colours into the bowl of oil.

What happens?

Science in a Nutshell

The water and oil do not mix. Instead, weird effects are observed!

Oil is less dense than water.

Water is a polar liquid – meaning there is a separation of charges on the water molecules so that one end is positive and the other end is negative. These charges allow water molecules to bond together.

Oil is a non-polar liquid.

Salt and sugar dissolve and mix in water because they too have polar molecules. They are able to bond with the water molecules.

However, non-polar molecules only mix with other non-polar molecules.

When we try to mix oil and water the water molecules stick toother, and the oil molecules stick together, then along with the fact that oil is less dense than water you will see that eventually the oil and water separate to form two layers. The water molecules pack closer together, so they sink to the bottom leaving the oil floating on top of the water.

When you mix your oil and water designs they will appear to stay mixed for a short time, we call this and emulsion. However, this doesn’t last long. If you look again after a minute or so, you will see the water and oil will have separated again. What colour is you water now?

Can you separate out the colours? Check out the science of chromatography!

The current list of SI units are:

Understanding how to measure using teaspoons, tablespoons, millilitres, and grams helps children develop real-world numeracy. It’s also a great introduction to unit conversions and volume comparisons, especially when working with both metric and imperial systems.

When children use tools like these spoons, they’re not just cooking or crafting — they’re practising the same measurement skills used by scientists in real laboratories.
