Science Note

The tri-string wand works by trapping air inside a soapy film stretched between three pieces of string. The absorbed bubble mix strengthens the film, allowing it to stretch into supersized bubbles.

Top Tip:
Close the wands gently after inflating a bubble – this seals off the film and lets the bubble float away rather than collapsing. It’s like tying off a balloon, locking the air safely inside.

1. The Bubble Sandwich!

Every bubble is a stretchy sandwich made of soap–water–soap. This delicate film traps air inside, thanks to something called surface tension. Soap weakens the water’s grip just

enough to let it stretch and flex into a bubble without bursting straight away.

To make these bubbles super strong, we add clever ingredients like xanthan gum (included in your kit!). This special powder slows down how quickly the water evaporates and makes the bubble film much more elastic — perfect for creating bubbles you can catch and bounce!

2. Keeping Bubbles Alive for Longer

Bubbles usually pop because their water disappears into the air (especially on warm or windy days). That’s why we include a pH adjuster (baking powder) and bubble-strengthening agents in our kit — they work together to slow evaporation and give you more time to play.

You’ll notice: stronger solution = longer-lasting bubbles. That’s when the real bubble tricks begin!

3. Bounce Them? Yes, You Can!

Normally, bubbles pop when they touch skin because of oils, dust, and

rough surfaces. But our magic gloves act like a soft landing pad — they protect the bubble and let you catch it, balance it, even bounce it!

A STEM Twist:

How to build your trip-string wand

These wands aren’t just for fun – they’re also a great way to explore surface tension, air flow, and the chemistry of bubbles. Learn as you play!

Stretch Test with the Tri-String Wand

Before you start, make sure your tri-string wand is fully soaked in bubble solution. Play with the wand to create bubbles of all sizes and get the string ready!

To measure bubble length, use a measuring tape or mark the ground using foot lengths or strides.

Test Instructions:

• Dip the string section of the wand into the bucket of bubble solution. You have to make sure the whole of the string is covered. DO NOT STIR this will tangle up the string.
• Keeping the sticks of the wand together remove the string from the bubble solution. Lift the sticks high. Open up the sticks. You will see a bubble film stretch between the strings.
• If it isn’t windy you will have to walk backwards (safely!) to catch the air in the bubble film.

To make a bubble:

On a calm day: Walk backwards to let the air fill the film – you will need to practice the speed at which you walk. Too slow and nothing will happen – Too fast the bubble film will burst

On a breezy day: Stand with your back to the wind.

The wind will inflate the bubble for you! You don’t need to move – just open the wand and let the wind do the magic. If it is too windy the pushing forces of the air molecules will burst the delicate bubble film.

1. Measure the length of your longest bubble at the point that it just pops or breaks.
2. Repeat 3 times for each solution.
3. Because wind can affect your results, should you repeat the test more than 3 times?

Bubbles by the sea

Science Note:

The large loop and gentle movement help trap air in the bubble film. The soaked string creates a stable surface that stretches into a giant bubble before breaking away.

 Top Tip: Close the Wands to Make the Bubble Fly!

When you’re ready to release your bubble, gently bring the two wands back together. This pinches the soap film and seals off the bubble, allowing it to float away instead of collapsing.

Why This Works:

• The soap film is like a stretchy curtain between the 3 lengths of string.
• If you don’t close the wands, the film stays openand the bubble won’t break off — it just pops or collapses.
• Closing the wands snaps the film shut, turning the long soap tunnel into a complete bubble.

Think of it like tying the end of a balloon — the air stays inside the bubble because you’ve sealed it off just in time.

This creative activity helps to develop children’s understanding of control through investigating simple pneumatic systems and designing and making a model of a toy that has moving parts controlled by moving air – pneumatics.

This creative activity can also be used to investigate camouflage as an adaptation and why it helps organisms to survive. The activity can reinforce the usefulness of being able to ‘hide’ in an environment in a fun way – and which child doesn’t like playing hide-and-seek?!

Engage your children in an exciting hands-on activity by introducing them to a simple pneumatic toy project. This delightful creation, powered by the inflation of a balloon, offers an excellent opportunity for students to explore basic principles of air pressure while unleashing their creativity.

In this project, children construct a charming creepy crawly toy with a unique twist—the toy’s mouth is animated by the inflation of a balloon. This dynamic feature adds an element of surprise and fosters curiosity among students. Not only does it serve as an entertaining toy, but it also provides an interactive platform for learning about pneumatic systems.

Encourage students to personalise their creepy crawlies by decorating them with vibrant colours and patterns. This creative aspect opens the door to discussions about camouflage in the animal kingdom, making the project an interdisciplinary learning experience.

Through this hands-on activity, students will not only grasp the fundamentals of pneumatic systems but also gain insight into the fascinating world of adaptation and survival strategies. This project not only enhances their understanding of science and engineering but also cultivates artistic expression and critical thinking skills.

Note: The balloon can be inflated by the children directly blowing down the tube or with the aid of a balloon pump.

The Mini-Beast Art Kit will allow your children  to:

 Activity 1: Creature Design Sheet

 Objective: Children will sketch and decorate their own creepy crawly creature.
 Focus: Shape, colour, pattern, camouflage techniques, body structure (legs, wings, antennae).
 Top Tip: Encourage them to think about how their creature hides in its habitat—leaf patterns? Muddy textures? Bark-like colours?

 Add-on: Give their creature a name and write one “super power” or adaptation that helps it survive.

 Activity 2: Creature Fact Bookmark

 Objective: Children will choose a real-life insect, bug, or small animal that inspired their pneumatic toy and create an information bookmark.
 Focus: Name, habitat, adaptations, diet, and a fun fact.

 Challenge: Can they link their design to something real? (e.g., “My creepy crawly is based on the stick insect—it’s almost invisible in the woods!”)

 Activity 3: Monster Profile Card

 Objective: Create a “Meet My Monster” profile card.
 Focus: Drawing of the final creature, a short story, character traits, habitat description, and what makes it unique.

 Optional Prompt:

• When it feels threatened, it…

 Extension Idea: Use the envelope to create a habitat pocket! Decorate it and tuck the creature design or profile inside.

The wand-motion sheet adds a little wizarding inspiration. Practise movements with the wand switched off and unloaded. Keep it steady when producing a flame.

Before the magic: prepare your wand

1. Charge your wand

Before first use, charge your wand using the supplied USB charging cable. Keep it switched off and unloaded while charging.

The indicator on the charging cable turns green when the wand is fully charged. Disconnect the cable before preparing the wand for use.

2. Allow the flash paper to dry completely

Flash paper is supplied slightly damp for safety. The portion you intend to use must be fully dry for the wand to work properly.

Allow it to air-dry at room temperature in a secure place away from heat, sparks, naked flames, children and pets. Prepare only the amount needed for your session.

To speed up the process you could use a hairdryer on low heat mode.

3. Cut neatly rather than tear

Scissors produce a consistently sized piece with tidy edges, making folding and positioning more repeatable.

The heating element sits at the bottom of the small cup-shaped recess at the wand’s tip. Correct positioning allows heat to transfer from the element to the paper and start ignition.

Do not  press tools against the delicate heating element.

4. Folding the flash paper

Fold the strip in half, then fold it in half again. Roll the folded paper tightly into a small roll that fits inside the heating cup at the wand’s tip.

Keep the wand switched off and the tip cool while loading. The roll should fit without being forced into the cup. Take care not to press against or damage the heating element.

5. Prepare the performance area

Check the space before any flame effect. Keep people, animals, hair, clothing, decorations and other combustible materials clear.

Use only in a location suitable for flame effects, with appropriate fire precautions and any necessary venue permission. Keep spare flash paper separate from the performance area and away from heat, sparks and flames.

6. Activation — a little theatrical magic!

With your performance area clear, point the wand away from yourself, other people, animals and flammable materials. Switch the wand ON and keep it steady.

Press the activation button. The flash paper may ignite immediately, or it may take a couple of seconds as the heating element warms up. Keep the tip directed into the clear space throughout.

Release the button as soon as the paper ignites, then switch the wand OFF. Allow the tip to cool before reloading.

If it does not ignite, release the button and switch off. Allow the tip to cool before checking the paper or charging the unloaded wand.

Where’s the science?

From electrical energy to a fiery flash

The rechargeable battery supplies electrical energy to the heating element. As current passes through it, the element heats up.

Heat transferred to the flash paper starts a rapid chemical reaction, releasing energy as heat and light.

What is flash paper?

Flash paper is made from nitrocellulose—a chemically treated cellulose material that burns rapidly, producing gases and very little solid residue.

The battery provides the energy to start ignition; the flash paper provides the chemical energy released in the flame.

Why does the effect vary?

The amount, dryness and arrangement of the flash paper affect how it ignites and burns. These factors help explain why one flash may look different from another.

A quick flash does not mean a cool flame: even a brief flame can cause burns or ignite nearby materials.

Real fire deserves real care

• Adult use only. Keep the wand and flash paper out of children’s reach.
• Never point the wand towards yourself, another person or an animal.
• Do not use it for duelling.
• Keep the wand steady during activation; do not wave it while producing a flame.
• Keep it switched off during loading and whenever it is not in use.
• Never look into the nozzle or touch the heating element.
• Allow the tip to cool before reloading or putting the wand away.
• Keep stored flash paper away from heat, sparks, flames and the performance area.
• If ignition fails the wand may need to be recharged and/or the flash paper has become slightly damp.
