This creative activity can also be used to investigate camouflage as an adaptation and why it helps organisms to survive. The activity can reinforce the usefulness of being able to ‘hide’ in an environment in a fun way – and which child doesn’t like playing hide-and-seek?!

Engage your children in an exciting hands-on activity by introducing them to a simple pneumatic toy project. This delightful creation, powered by the inflation of a balloon, offers an excellent opportunity for students to explore basic principles of air pressure while unleashing their creativity.

In this project, children construct a charming creepy crawly toy with a unique twist—the toy’s mouth is animated by the inflation of a balloon.  Add-on: Give their creature a name and write one “super power” or adaptation that helps it survive.

 Objective: Children will choose a real-life insect, bug, or small animal that inspired their pneumatic toy and create an information bookmark.
 Focus: Name, habitat, adaptations, diet, and a fun fact.

 Challenge: Can they link their design to something real? (e.g., “My creepy crawly is based on the stick insect—it’s almost invisible in the woods!”)

 Objective: Create a “Meet My Monster” profile card.

In this video Scientific Sue will show you how you can use Ooze Baff crystals in a very magical spell. A similar spell used by the Death Eaters in the Mr Potters Magical World. The death eaters suck up the souls of their victims – our ‘Death Eater Crystals (Ooze Baff crystals) suck up liquids! Use a little bit of science to find out how much the crystals suck up and still stay in a sticky solid format – then use that science in the Evanesco Spell. This video will take you through the steps you need to take to wow and confuse your audience – Science Magic – Fun Guaranteed!

The Science

Ooze baff crystals are an example of  water absorbing polymers.

A polymer is a molecule, made from joining together many small molecules called monomers. The word “polymer” can be broken down into “poly” (meaning “many” in Greek) and “mer” (meaning “unit”).

Sodium polyacrylate are the water absorbing polymers found in babies nappies – the crystals Scientific Sue uses in her first EVANESCO Spell in the video below.

Water absorbing polymers soak up water through a process called osmosis and they swell up. Some, like Ooze Baff, just absorb a small amount of water. Others, like the crystals in nappies absorb huge amounts of water.

The polymer chains have an elastic quality. The amount they stretch depends on the polymer. Ooze Baff makes a wonderful slime like substance, whilst the nappy powder makes a substance like slushy snow.

Most common synthetic polymers are said to be hydrophobic (water-fearing), which means that they do not absorb water. Examples of these polymers might include products such as plastic cups, bags, and plastic toys. There are also hydrophilic, or water-loving polymers. Many natural polymers such as cotton fibres are hydrophilic.

Make Your Own Fossil Kit!

Science2Life’s Science iT! Activities take everyday life objects, toys and knick-knacks and turns them into fun, innovative science projects.

In this activity Scientific Sue uses the quick drying action of casting stone to help create 3D copies of your dinosaurs of choice.

A complete learning activity – this mega dig kit includes everything you need to create and uncover your very own fossils!

Ideal gift for any dinosaur fan!

This kit contains:

• Dinosaur puzzle
• 2 Dinosaur toys
• Casting foam
• Wooden Tools
• Toothbrush
• 3 x 32 g casting stone (enough to make 3 models)
• Measuring cup
• Dinosaur box – to be coloured in

Build your dinosaur skeleton puzzle: bury it, cast it, then dig it!

Building this 3D puzzle stimulates logical thinking and special imagination.

1. Build your Dinosaur puzzle.
2. Gently push it into the foam mould using the wooden stick – this ensures no finger marks are made.
3. Carefully remove your dinosaur skeleton.
4. Carefully measure 10 ml of water and add it to 32 g (or 30 ml) of dental stone powder.
5. Mix until you have a smooth paste (a bit like a thick batter) – 30 seconds max.
6. Pour the paste into the mold – use the lollipop stick to smooth the surface.
7. Leave for 60 minutes.
8. Place your mould on a tray.
9. Carefully remove the outer layer of the foam with your fingers.
10. As you get closer to the skeleton you will then need to use the wooden stick.
11. The toothbrush is then used to brush away the foam that is found within the rib cage and other crevasses.
12. When completely dry paint your fossil!

Casting stone can be used to collect many kinds of impressions. Forensic scientists use it a lot to gather impressions of shoe prints and type tracks.

Casting stone emits a little bit of heat while it hardens – so we can’t use it for impressions made in snow!

Visualising the Invisible – Hands-on  investigations  plus  pre-recorded interactive  show  and  teacher  guidance with  Scientific Sue!

Our Mysterious Microbes Workshop has been designed to teach young people about microbes and how microbial infections are spread and can be prevented through improved hygiene.

An interactive virtual workshop suitable for children aged 6 – 13 years old.

The workshop consists of a 45-minute introductory show (requiring volunteers) by Scientific Sue which is followed by 2 (or possibly 3) science investigations.

• Handwashing training session using glow in the dark technology.
• Snot-Spatter Investigation

This programme introduces, in a fun and engaging manner, the different types of microbes which share our world with us.

The interactive activities cover the topics of:

Food Poisoning

• Hand hygiene.
• Dental plaque being a bacterial biofilm.
• Yeast is a useful fungus.
• Some microbes cause food poisoning.
• The use of a mask or tissues help prevent the spread of harmful microbes.
• Use of disinfectants help to protect humans from harmful microbes.

The learning objectives of the Mysterious Microbes Workshop are:

• Know where microorganisms (microbes) fit into the 5 kingdoms of life.
• Know what characteristics are used to determine if something is living or not.
• Some microorganisms are living (such as bacteria) and some are not (such as viruses).
• Only a few microbes are bad.
• Microbes can sometimes cause illness and diseases.
• The symptoms of illnesses (like sneezing) can lead to microbes being spread and other people getting infected.
• Good hygiene can reduce the spread of microbes and so stop infections spreading.

The mysterious microbe session is virtually introduced by Scientific Sue via a 20-minute pre-recorded video introducing microbes ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!’

Even though this session is delivered remotely, via a pre-recorded video, there are opportunities for interactivity Sue will need some volunteers! She will ask for a volunteer, the video is paused, the activity carried out and when the volunteer/s have returned to their seats the video is restarted.

The ‘How to Organise your Event’ video guides the organiser through all sections of the interactive show and investigative workshop.

The virtual show section of this programme allows the children to:

• ‘Visualise the invisible’.
• Learn about bacteria, viruses and fungi.
• Understand that some microbes are good for us and some are bad.
• Discover how good microbes are used in the food industry.
• Find out how disclosing tablets can be used to help us see the bacterial biofilm call dental plaque.
• Discover how we use disinfectants to protect us against the bad microbes (which we call pathogens).

The hands-on workshop sections of this programme include:

• Ultra Violet (UV) Germ Training
• The Snot Spatter Experiment
• The Yeast Race Experiment, started in the introductory session, can also be extended as a group investigation allowing opportunities to explore scientific processes such as fair testing in more depth.
