This creative activity can also be used to investigate camouflage as an adaptation and why it helps organisms to survive. The activity can reinforce the usefulness of being able to ‘hide’ in an environment in a fun way – and which child doesn’t like playing hide-and-seek?!

Engage your children in an exciting hands-on activity by introducing them to a simple pneumatic toy project. This delightful creation, powered by the inflation of a balloon, offers an excellent opportunity for students to explore basic principles of air pressure while unleashing their creativity.

In this project, children construct a charming creepy crawly toy with a unique twist—the toy’s mouth is animated by the inflation of a balloon.  Add-on: Give their creature a name and write one “super power” or adaptation that helps it survive.

Flash Paper

The flash paper needs to be dry. Run a hairdryer on the hot setting over the paper for 10 – 20 seconds before use.

The strip measurement used in the video is 1 cm x 10 cm strips. Fold the strip twice, then roll it. It will be the perfect fit for the opening at the tip of the wand!

The wand must be switched off when it is not in use and when you are loading the flash paper.

In the Cloud in a Bottle demonstration, the students directly observe a cloud from right before their eyes – and when the bottle is connected back to the pump and the air pressure is increased they will see the cloud disappear!

Cloud formation is part of the water cycle, but one we usually cannot see up close.

A cloud is a large collection of very tiny water droplets or ice crystals. The droplets are so small and light that they can float in the air. When warm air rises carrying with it evaporated water, it expands and cools. Cool air cannot hold as much water vapour as warm air, so some of the vapour condenses onto tiny pieces of dust that are floating in the air and forms a tiny droplet around each dust particle. When billions of these droplets come together they become a visible cloud.

This demonstration shows how water in the atmosphere can be made visible by changes in pressure and temperature.

A little bit of info

The code of the lithium coin battery itself is an International Electro-Chemical (IEC) designation. The name CR2032 can be divided into two codes, the first one is the letter code which tells us the standard case size while the numeral code gives us information about the diameter of the cell followed by the height of the cell. In CR2032’s case, 20 refers to the fact that the cell has a diameter of 20 millimeters while 32 refers to its height of 3.2 millimeters. There are specific plug-in and solder-in CR2032 batteries as well.
